The Peace Dollar holds immense appeal among collectors due to its relatively short minting period among U.S. currency and being the last Silver Dollar minted. This renowned design was produced from 1921 to 1928, with a reissue in 1934 and 1935, following changes in legislation.
Anthony di Francisci’s Peace Dollar was the winning design of a contest seeking a new dollar design. His unique portrayal of Lady Liberty was based on the actual Statue of Liberty, creating a patriotic and familiar appearance. The eagle on the reverse clutches an olive branch, symbolizing peace and commemorating the tranquility that followed World War I.
Controversy surrounded the Peace Dollar design, leading to last-minute changes.
The design of Peace Dollars sparked protests among World War I veterans who obtained a copy of the winning design before its minting. While they appreciated Lady Liberty on the obverse, it was the eagle on the reverse that stirred outrage among the veterans and many other Americans. They telegraphed President Harding, requesting the removal of the artwork. The initial reverse design depicted an eagle holding an olive branch while perched on a broken sword, which many interpreted as a symbol of defeat rather than peace. U.S. Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan promptly modified the design with input from the original designer, Anthony de Francisci. It is this revised design that graces Peace Dollars.
Collect Peace Dollars, designed by Italian immigrant and sculptor Anthony de Francisci.
Anthony de Francisci, a sculptor and coin designer, achieved the American dream after immigrating with his Italian parents at the age of 8 in 1895. Through hard work and determination, he attained success as a coin designer. Before creating the winning Silver Dollar design, de Francisci studied under renowned coin designer James Earle Fraser at Cooper Union in Manhattan. He also assisted Silver coin designers Hermon MacNeil and Adolph A. Weinman, and his connections likely played a role in his hiring at the U.S. Mint. In addition to the Peace Dollar, de Francisci designed the Maine Centennial Commemorative Half Dollar.
In 1921, Anthony de Francisci designed the Peace Dollar to commemorate peace after World War I.
